Not What You Would Expect!

LFG Dungeons and Dragons 4th Ed.

So you are interested in playing Dungeons and Dragons huh?  Down for some old school pen and paper role playing?  Not sure how to get into a group, or what you should be doing?  Not to worry, we got that covered.  Lets sit down and answer all of those questions and provide you with some good information!

How Do You Get Into a Dungeons and Dragons Group?

There are a few ways to get into an actual group, and it all depends on how comfortable you are with public interaction.  If you have friends that are either interested, or already playing a game, they should be more than welcome to let you join.  Sit in on a couple of games and watch how they play, if you are still interested in jumping in, talk to the Dungeon Master (DM).  He will be able to help you with getting a character started and getting into the world that is being laid out.

If you don't know anyone who currently plays the game, don't fret, there are still many ways to get into a game.  Check with your local hobby shops.  Ask around in these stores and you will usually be able to find a few different people who play.  If you are unable to find players in the store, speak to whomever runs the shop.  If there isn't a message board somewhere in the store to post a quick message about your interest in playing, ask if you can start one.

The local bookstore is another great place to find players.  If you have an extra few minutes to stop into your local Barnes and Noble, do so.  Check out the section where the DnD books are located.  If you are unable to locate players, again try to see if your bookstore has a bulletin board where you can post a message.

The wonderful Internet is a safe and easy way to locate a game that is in progress, or others that are looking to start one.  A quick google search can net you locations where people play, or forums where people are looking for new players.  This is a great resource to find others that are interested in starting a game or looking for a few more players, however there are a few concerns.  It's no secret that there are a few weird people on the Internet, so avoid giving out personal information.  If you are invited to join a game at someones place, use your head.  If something doesn't seem right, don't go.  If you feel too uncomfortable by yourself, bring a friend with you.  While most people that you meet are going to be harmless, there are always crazy people waiting to beat you with a hammer...

What do you need?

Here are a few things to consider picking up in order to make your DnD sessions a little smoother:

  • Pencils and Paper: DnD involves a lot of writing down notes and numbers and then erasing them.  Always use a pencil when playing, NEVER a pen.  Holding on to a few pieces of paper to write down a quick note about a story or a question for later is always a good idea.
  • Dice:One set should run you about 10 dollars online.  They come in may different sizes and colors, pick the ones that best suit you!
  • Character Sheets: If you have access to the Internet, you can find character sheets pretty quickly.  Your character sheet is used to track stats and information pertaining to the character you are playing.
  • Player's Handbook: For a player, this is going to be your most valuable asset.  It covers every aspect of the game, from creating a character to the different game mechanics involved when playing.  This is a great reference for seasoned players as well.

What Do You Need to Know?

The biggest issue new players have with the game is the fact that Dungeons and Dragons has a huge amount of rules.  This may overwhelm a new payer and turn them off to playing the game.  So how does on learn the game?

  • Play the game!  The best way to learn is to play the game and make mistakes. I really cannot stress enough that the easiest way to learn is going to be playing the game.
  • Read the Players handbook.  Don't get discouraged at how large it is.  Keep in mind that the race and class sections cover a large portion of the book.
  • Talk to your DM.  Talk to other players!  Those that have been playing the game can share their knowledge with you.  Don't be afraid to ask questions.
  • Check out the forums on the official Wizards of the Coast website.  Most of the users that frequent that site are very knowledgeable and open to answering even the simplest of questions.  Most will also give you page numbers in the players handbook for more information.

Dungeons and Dragons may seem like a daunting game, however once you find a good group to play with, a decent understanding of the rules and a few essential supplies, you will be having fun in no time.  Remember when finding a group to join, stay safe.  Strangers can quickly become great friends, but there are always those with more sinister motives. Read over the Players Handbook several times, and most importantly have fun!
